Buildings Surveys and Fees

Buildings Historian compiles a history of your home or other building of interest through a range of techniques tailored to your requirements and budget.

Typically this could include:

  • Investigation of the architectural and structural features of the building
  • Above ground survey of the wider landscape
  • Use of a range of archaeological techniques including an historical assessment of the fabric and layout of the building
  • Review of available documentary evidence and photographs

to help compose the history of your home or other building of interest, its history and evolution, the people associated with it and its social history.

Buildings Historian offers a range of skills, at a reasonable cost, whether your interest is in the history of your home or building, the people associated with it, or the social history associated with it.

Fees

scoping report – an initial assessment and an outline research plan for a homeowner perhaps to undertake much of the research themselves, with support when needed, can generally be undertaken in a day with any further work charged at an agreed rate. If you would like to undertake some of  the research yourself we would be delighted to build a tailored package of support for you – pointing you towards potentially fruitful avenues of enquiry and offering advice and expertise where required. However this is  not comprehensive research as it will only allow cursory examination of the building and will not allow any time for archive visits or examination of documents.

If you would like us to undertake the research and report back, then an initial  buildings survey and desk-based scoping review of available sources with a short, written report can be completed in as few as three days. This would allow some time for a visit to the local archive. If required, further, more comprehensive work can be discussed and fees agreed before any additional research is undertaken.

Research findings can be presented in a variety of formats ranging from a formal, fully referenced, academic style, report, to a colour ‘desktop-published’ style document or booklet in printed or electronic format. We are also very happy to help to produce information or interpretation boards for historic properties; either as framed designs for indoor display or as outdoor weatherproof panels.

Please do ‘Contact Us’  to discuss your ideas and potential requirements. We will be delighted to have an initial discussion with you without any charge or commitment. Our usual rate is £295 (inclusive) per day with any additional fees, such as travel or archive or copyright fees charged at cost. We appreciate that many homeowners and businesses will want to minimise costs; something that we always respect. Because the history of each building is different and research may throw up surprises or blind alleys it is generally best to agree to commission  either a scoping assessment or buildings survey, at a fee agreed in advance, and then separately to agree any further research and fees once that is complete.
