Landscapes

Buildings are purposefully sited in relation to landscape features such as roads, agriculture or watercourses, which themselves evolve over time.

Using archaeological skills can help understanding of the wider context in which a building sits – garden features and surrounding fields for example. Showing how a building evolved alongside the landscape it sits in can help to explain its history. Buildings Historian uses techniques such as:

  • Interpretation of publically available aerial photography
  • LIDAR (laser ranging data) which allows features in the landscape to be seen beneath the tree canopy
  • Drone technology
  • Map regression analysis (sequential overlay of historical maps)

to show the evolution of the building alongside other features in the landscape.
