Houses

Architectural style says much about the history of a building. A specialist archaeological and a documentary approach adds much more to the picture.

Houses

Phases of development in the buildings history can be revealed through

  • exploring ‘vertical stratigraphy’
  • assessing construction materials and method
  • dating methods such as dendrochronology (use of tree rings)
  • researching documents, probate records, indentures and maps

These methods of investigation help us to interpret how a building was used and how it has been adapted over time.
